Advancing the Profession and the Professional

Accreditation in Public Relations

More than 25 percent of the San Antonio Area chapter's 100-plus members are accredited. The chapter is happy to assist test candidates who are preparing for the accreditation exam.

This is a voluntary certification program for public relations professionals. The Universal Accreditation Program is newly formed as of January 1, 1998. Nine public relations organizations now participate in the universal program, including the Agricultural Relations Council, the Florida Public Relations Association, the Maine Public Relations Council, the National School Public Relations Association, the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development, the Southern Public Relations Federation, and the Texas Public Relations Association. The program is administered by PRSA, which operated its own accreditation program beginning in 1964.

Candidates may schedule to take the computerized, multiple-choice examination at their convenience. Candidates must first declare their intent to prepare for the examination by completing an application process, prepare for and schedule a readiness review and then Advance to take the written examination. Chapter accreditation chairs can help candidates determine when to apply and sit for Readiness Review, especially if any local preparation sessions are planned.
