A Few Notes on the Job Bank

By Russell Guerrero
(Aug 2006) Sometimes I think it is a little odd to be in charge of our PRSA job bank. In the 20+ years that I have worked full-time, I have only been employed at two places: a television station and a university. I am the last person to really have a good idea on how to apply for a new position. Nevertheless, since I have been the job bank coordinator, I have been happy to learn about new job opportunities and to pass them on to those PR professionals looking for a new challenge.

And while I think that the job bank has been of great benefit for the chapter, there have been some things left unsaid about how it operates. Here are a few notes on the workings of the job bank.

One of the weaknesses of the job bank is that I do not have the time to actively call businesses and ask if they are hiring; there are just too many companies to contact. Instead I rely on our PRSA membership to clue me in about new positions. Here is my first plea – if you find out about a job opening, please let me know. Send the details to me or give me an idea who to contact. I’ll be happy to chase down the details for the job bank Web site.

If your business is looking for a new PR person, let them know that the PRSA job bank is a great way to target established and well qualified job applicants. And there is no charge for posting a job position on our site.

Finally, if you do use the job bank to land a new position, I would love to hear from you. Not only do I want to share in your good news, I would also like to measure the success of this membership service.

I’ve enjoyed being the job bank coordinator but not for the obvious reason of checking out new jobs – I’m happy where I am. Instead, the job bank has been a great way to come in contact with several PRSA members. And I hope that, in some small way, I’ve helped a few PR careers.
