Making a Career Choice Can Be Scary (August 2009)
The San Antonio PRSA and PRSSA chapters have designated the entire month of October for Shadow Days. Shadow Days are a chance for PRSA members to allow student members of PRSSA to find out what a “day in the life” of a Public Relations practitioner is like. Some PRSA members have used this as a way to get a few extra hands for special events or to help with various PR projects. You don’t even have to devote an entire day! A half-day or a couple of hours with a student goes a long way to build confidence in their career choice. If you are interested in hosting a student or students contact Celine Thomasson at (210) 256-8479 or cthomasson@nw.org.

August Luncheon (July 2009)
“There is hope after a layoff – How to reinvent yourself for a new career” Former San Antonio Express-News Metro columnist Ken Rodriguez had hoped to end his career in the newspaper business. In March of this year, he became a “budget cut.” But, as he puts it, being laid off was “one of the best things that has happened to me.” Hear Ken at the next PRSA luncheon on Thursday, August 6. Ethics Moment (July 2009)
Scenario: Your employer markets a sensing device that is supposed to detect the presence of radon levels that have been determined to be harmful to humans and cancer-causing. This is a breakthrough product. The demand is such that your employer has two manufacturing plants working at capacity. You just became aware of the results of studies that show the sensing device does not work as claimed. What do you do? Discuss at least one unethical approach to your handling of this problem.

San Antonio PRSA named one of the fastest growing chapters (July 2009)
By Robert E. Sheldon, APR President, San Antonio PRSA If you’ve noticed that attendance has been up at chapter at luncheons, banquets and other events over the past year or so, there’s a reason: We’re bigger than we used to be. At last count we had 139 members.
And, we’ve been growing faster than most other chapters our size. In June, the San Antonio PRSA Chapter was recognized by National PRSA for being the fifth fastest growing chapter out of 34 other medium-size chapters (100-199 members) during 2008. In fact, our two-year growth rate (2007-2008) ranks us as the fourth fastest growing chapter out of 70 chapters in the Medium, Large and Extra Large category.

My 2 Cents (July 2009)
By Anne Keever Cannon, APR I believe in accreditation. We’ve seen lots of opinions over the years in favor of and against public relations accreditation. One old argument is that “APR” doesn’t equal a bigger paycheck. That may be true. Nevertheless, the process helped me greatly increase my knowledge and expertise in the field.
