Advancing the Profession and the Professional
June Luncheon Recap (June 2010)

Print journalism may not be dead, but print media is going the way of the railroad. That was the message from Bill Conroy, of the San Antonio Business Journal at the June PRSA luncheon. In the years before social media, according to Conroy, media dominated one-way communication. Read on at the PRSA Blog.

Remembering a PR Pioneer: Betsy Plank (June 2010)

Today, the PRSA family mourns the loss of BetsyPlank, APRFellow PRSA, who passed away on May 23, following a brief illness. She was 86. (Read tributes to Betsy’s life and accomplishments here and here.)

While the term “pioneer” is often loosely used, Betsy was a true trailblazer in the field of public relations. A resident of Chicago, Betsy was the first woman to head a division of Illinois Bell, be elected president of the Publicity Club of Chicago and serve as president of PRSA.

During her career, Betsy earned countless accolades for her dedication and service to public relations. She was the first ever to have received three of PRSA’s top individual honors: the Gold Anvil Award (1977), the Paul M. Lund Public Service Award (1989) and the Patrick Jackson Award for Distinguished Service to PRSA (2001). Betsy also received the Arthur W. Page Society’s Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Institute for Public Relations’ Alexander Hamilton Medal for major contributions to the practice of public relations, in 2000.   Click on the article's title above to read more...

PRSA Member Spotlight (June 2010)

Michele Krier, Director of Public Relations and Marketing

Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club

By Randy Escamilla

Michele Krier’s genuine smile will light up a room when she discusses public relations.  The Trinity University graduate became interested in public relations following internships at the Edgewood School District and later at St. Mary’s Hall.

“My job involved finding interesting story ideas to pitch to the media. I never really considered another career path after that experience, as it gave me the chance to write and work with journalists—a combination I still love! I enjoy both equally, but have a special fondness for pitching stories, especially nationally,” she said.

Meet & Greet Etiquette á la ZZ Top

By Melissa Vela-Williamson

Recently, I had the pleasure of assisting a photographer at a convention downtown. My job was to help him keep track of photos and subjects during some celebrity meet and greets. What fun!  After a killer concert, the legends from ZZ Top were prepping to meet some lucky fans. Their manager came in before their arrival and laid out some simple rules that I thought were valuable to share. It was obvious this wasn’t the band’s first rodeo, because that session was the smoothest and quickest of the convention.  While I thought the crowd might complain, they understood and followed accordingly. In fact, I’d say they were more comfortable because they knew what to expect.

Stay Connected – Stay Happy

By Trisha Box

Lately, there have been so many discussions on being happy, what is happiness, who is happy or even measuring happiness.  Everyone is talking about it: Facebook, ABC News, Science Daily and even a website about a conference in Australia, “Happiness & Its Causes.”

We all have our own definition, causes, reasons but who could help from wondering really what is real happiness.  After talking with a friend who recently lost a four-year-old child to cancer about this subject and if she could ever be happy, I thought I needed to find the answer if not for me but for my friend.

My answers were found in unexpected places right away.  I picked up a book entitled Connect by Dr. Edward Hallowell, a well-known psychiatrist.  I flipped through the book quickly and landed on the last chapter, If You Want to be Happy.  The first sentence took my breath away. (Please click on the title to read more...)
